The Garvin barn overlooks south Lake Leelanau in Leelanau County, known to everyone that frequents south lake. I was privileged to meet Mr. and Mrs. Garvin this past summer…delightful people who run a small resort on the lake and sell beef raised on the farm.
Those that are familiar with “Dirt Road Diaries” know that I find barns late in their cycle of life to be as interesting and photogenic as those at earlier stages in their life cycle. This southern Michigan barn located miles from the nearest paved road, sits on a 160- acre farm owned by a retired pediatric cardiac surgeon and his wife. The farmhouse was 100+ years old when they purchased the farm and have completely remodeled it into an energy-efficient “smart house.” The couple raise sheep and enjoy a less stressful lifestyle.
