The Garvin barn overlooks south Lake Leelanau in Leelanau County, known to everyone that frequents south lake. I was privileged to meet Mr. and Mrs. Garvin this past summer…delightful people who run a small resort on the lake and sell beef raised on the farm.

Those that are familiar with “Dirt Road Diaries” know that I find barns late in their cycle of life to be as interesting and photogenic as those at earlier stages in their life cycle. I don’t find modern pole buildings to be interesting, but “traditional” barns have appeal. This southern Michigan barn located miles from the nearest paved road, sits on a 160- acre farm owned by a retired pediatric cardiac surgeon and his wife. The farmhouse was 100+ years old when they purchased the farm and have completely remodeled it into an energy-efficient “smart house.” The couple raise sheep and enjoy a less stressful lifestyle.
